Classes

Our classes help students quickly build confidence in their dancing by developing a solid base of vocabulary and technique. We teach leaders and followers a large repertoire of fun partnered moves that will allow students to enjoy dancing in a social setting right away. We give students opportunities to combine these moves together on their own, and practice changing the rhythm of their steps.

Drop-ins and Themes

Our drop-in lessons are organized into 5-week themes. The first four weeks will cover moves, techniques, and concepts related to that theme. In the fifth week, we will put everything together from the previous four weeks into a routine.

The drop-in classes should all be accessible to an entry level dancer. First time dancers can take a single lesson and become comfortable enough to start dancing with others at the lab. The class material changes from week to week so those who come back can learn something new each time.

To get the most out of the material, students can show up for all the classes in a given theme. This will allow students to link the material together from multiple weeks so that they can better understand the concepts behind each theme.

Energy of the Blues

In Energy of the Blues, we will show students how to project their individual energy into the dance. We can then use this energy to move in opposition to one another to create dynamics and add general pizzazz. Using these concepts, we’ll incorporate a few daring turns and cover simple break-away solo dance moves that can be done easily on the social dance floor.

Specific material we'll cover in this theme:
Week 1Side to side groove, turns for lead and follow, a slick way to enter closed position, handshake connection, leader’s belt slide, sexy hips
Week 2Quick vs slow, walking comfortably forwards and backwards, right and left pass bys, dip from closed
Week 3Partnered in-place turn to the right, travelling outside turn, inside free turn
Week 4Box step ; Breakaway Blues moves: snap turn entrance, fish tails, low downs, and the behind the back exit.
Week 5Energy of the Blues- Routine

The Blues Partnership

In The Blues Partnership, we will go into depth on how to move in unison within the blues partnership. The movements we will cover create a feeling that the partners form a single entity that moves as one. Leaders and followers will learn to detect their partner’s movement directly through the embrace rather than visually. In addition to the basics, we’ll cover moves in promenade, as well as how to dance in the more intimate close embrace position.

Scific material we'll cover in this theme:
Week 1Closed vs Close positions, Side to side groove, Inside turn, Momentum turn
Week 2Box step, Opening the lid of the box, the Messaround
Week 3Cross body lead in closed, Promenade variations, Halleluyah
Week 4Blues Aesthetics, Leans
Week 5The Blues Partnership - Routine
